5 Youtube Channels that Will Change Your Life

Youtube is one of my secret weapons that keeps me sharp because it allows me to continue to learn and develop when i’m winding down at the end of a long day or getting ready in the morning.

My relationship with Youtube really begins in early 2010 when I decided to "cut the cord". I was one of the early adopters that decided to unsubscribe from my cable provider (mostly because I was sick of the commercials) and suffice to say, I discovered that Youtube provided me access to a ton of amazing channels that I could learn and grow from.

Today I want to share with you 5 of my favorite learning channels. For a lifelong learner like me, these are entertainment as much as they are educational. I purposely have selected 5 channels that are fun and focus on intriguing topics. Learning needs to be fun. In the future I will share some of the best business learning and motivational channels I listen to, but today let's have some fun. Your brain is a muscle and like all muscles you need to expose it to many different kinds of stress if you want to see continued growth and development.

Top 5 Youtube Channels That Will Change Your Life

Crash Course: This channel is excellent because it explores digestible explanations on just about everything, including history, science, inventions, etc. The channel was created by the Green brothers, teachers who wanted to bring fun into high school classrooms. The format is easy to follow and they cover a huge variety of topics. And as Hank always says, DFTBA (Don't forget to be awesome!)

ExtraCredit: This is a fun channel that has also blossomed into many different subjects. However, I fell in love with these guys for their focus on game development. In my leisure time I often game on my PC (a blog on my favorite games will be coming soon). The reason why I recommend this channel is because I find the design lessons fit very nicely into any business development challenge. I find there is a ton of similarity in designing a game world as there is in designing products people will enjoy. It's short, cartoony theme conveys some very important info for any business builder.

In a Nutshell (Kurzgesagt): These guys are amazing! The channel was started by a small team out of Germany that builds thought provoking videos on the nature of our universe. They put a ton of research and time into each episode. Their quality over quantity approach always leaves me wanting more, and when I do see they launched a new one it makes my day! If you like space and exploration, this one is a MUST WATCH!

CGPGrey: A friend of mine introduced me to this adventure vlogger. Grey is a Brit who travels the world exploring cool topics. Sometimes his videos are educational while other times they feature his unending quest to learn about strange topics that are oddly very intriguing. I found a lot of his stuff also helped me understand power and business better. Take a look at his Keys to Power video. Very good stuff!

Like Stories of Old: This creator is very cool. He takes popular (And not so popular) movies and dissects them on a philosophical journey of self discovery. If you are a movie buff and LOVE digging into the deeper meaning of films and how they relate to the big questions in society (meaning of life, why we are here, suffering, what is joy, love, etc) this is definitely worth watching and subscribing.

What I have found is that if you focus on learning just 1 subject "business" or "leadership" You fail to truly grasp the complexity and nuances of the subject. To be truly effective in the world you must strengthen not only your core competencies, but also the surrounding matter. The more connections you can form across diverse disciplines, the more innovative and nimble you will be. Think of it like physical exercise. If you only focus on lifting weights for one muscle group you will only have one isolated area that is strong. By doing this, you are more prone to injury and will ultimately be weak because many of the stabilizing muscles will not be developed to make up for the weight you’re continuing to lift.

That’s why subscribing to varying ways of learning, whether it be through magazines, documentaries, online articles, Youtube, or else where are super important. An ongoing theme throughout my content will be the importance of learning from a holistic approach. If you want to get better at business, learn about gardening, history, science, cooking, and more! The more disciplines you gain a working knowledge, the more opportunity you will have to cross pollinate and spark inventive ideas.

Have any Youtube channels that you think I will love? Send them over, I’d love to check them out!
